[Atlanta] Training Workshop on Gender Expression and Sexual Orientation for Jewish Professionals

  • Marcus JCC of Atlanta 5342 Tilly Mill Rd Atlanta, GA, 30338 United States (map)

Our synagogues, community centers, camps, and schools are intended to be safe spaces for all people, regardless of gender expression or sexual orientation. SOJOURN and Groundspark are proud to partner to offer a workshop specifically geared to the program, education, and administrative staff of Jewish organizations and synagogues in Atlanta to ensure their agencies are safe and welcoming for all members, students, and participants.

This free, two-hour workshop will use the award-winning documentary Straightlaced -How Gender's Got Us All Tied Up to spark honest and in-depth conversations surrounding the concerns of gender expression and sexual orientation with children, teens, and families. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Marcus JCC of Atlanta and is open to all Jewish professionals regardless of affiliation or membership.

RSVP online HERE.

Funding for this project is made possible by the Amy Mandel and Katina Rodis Fund of the Mandel Family Foundation.

About Straightlaced -How Gender's Got Us All Tied Up:

With a fearless look at a highly charged subject, Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Straightlaced includes the perspectives of teens who self-identify as straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual or questioning and represent all points of the gender spectrum.

With courage and unexpected humor, they open up their lives to the camera: choosing between “male” and “female” deodorant; deciding whether to go along with anti-gay taunts in the locker room; having the courage to take ballet; avoiding the restroom so they won’t get beaten up; or mourning the suicide of a classmate. It quickly becomes clear that just about everything teens do requires thinking about gender and sexuality.

Coming of age today has become increasingly complex and challenging; Straightlaced -How Gender's Got Us All Tied Up offers both teens and adults a way out of anxiety, fear and violence and points the way toward a more inclusive, empowering culture.
