Purim off Ponce is SOJOURN's annual fundraiser. Since its inception, Purim off Ponce has been known as one of Atlanta's greatest costume parties. Great drinks, dinner, dancing, and of course, drag queens!
Purim off Ponce 2014 honored the work of Rabbi Brad Levenberg of Temple Sinai and Rabbi Loren Lapidus of The Temple. In recognition of their commitment both to the cause of equality and the Welcoming Synagogues Project, we were thrilled to present Rabbi Brad and Rabbi Loren with the Michael Jay Kinsler Rainmaker Award.
Rabbi Loren Lapidus, The Temple
Rabbi Loren Filson Lapidus joined the clergy team at The Temple in July 2008 and currently serves as an Associate Rabbi. She was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 2008 where she also received a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters. In Atlanta, Rabbi Lapidus has co-chaired multiple events for the Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition of the American Jewish Committee. She completed the Glass Leadership Institute of the Anti-Defamation League and continues to be involved with ADL, as well as SOJOURN and other Atlanta organizations. Rabbi Lapidus is a co-chair of the Advocacy Committee of the Women’s Rabbinic Network.
Rabbi Lapidus is married to Rabbi Micah Lapidus, who is the Director of Judaic and Hebrew Studies at The Alfred and Adele Davis Academy. They have a daughter, Hadara, who was born in 2011, and a son, Caleb, who was born in November, 2013.
Rabbi Brad Levenberg, Temple Sinai
Rabbi Levenberg joined Temple Sinai as Assistant Rabbi in 2006 and has been serving as Associate Rabbi since 2009. In addition to his work with Temple Sinai, Rabbi Levenberg currently sits on the Executive Board of FAMA (Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta), serves as President of Family Promise of North Fulton/Dekalb, and is serving as co-chair of the film selection committee for the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Rabbi Levenberg also serves NFTY as the NFTY SAR Regional Rabbi. He has also previously served on the Rainbow Center Steering Committee, the steering committee of the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival, and the steering committee of ACCESS, the young adult division of the American Jewish Committee. Additionally, Rabbi Levenberg is an alumni of LEAD Atlanta (2008) and works as a Sandy Springs Police Chaplain.
Rabbi Levenberg and his wife, Rebecca, are the parents of Ilana and Evan.
About the Michael Jay Kinsler Rainmaker Award
In 2014, the Rainmaker Award was renamed in honor of Michael Jay Kinsler. Michael was an active member of Congregation Bet Haverim and the Atlanta LGBT community and dedicated much of his life to ensuring that gay and lesbian Jews had a place to worship where they could find solace and pride. We hope to honor Michael's legacy of inclusion and action for many years to come.
